Occupy Seattle & American Federation of Teachers Give Night School New Meaning

Starting at 9pm tonight, instructors from across Seattle Community College campuses will begin teaching classes in support of Occupy Seattle. Classes will be held on the Plaza at Seattle Central Community College in Seattle and include such subjects as “Why We Support Occupy”, “Legislative Lobbying”, “The Art of the Protest Sign” and “Filming to Document Human Rights Violations”. Classes will continue throughout the night.

Karen Strickland, Seattle President of the American Federation of Teachers said in an open letter to Paul Kilpatrick, President of Seattle Central Community College that “…the board is in support of SCCC accommodating the request of Occupy Seattle for a number of reasons. The students and employees of the SCCD are the 99% and are suffering because of the economic inequity that characterizes our society and which has dramatically worsened since the 1970’s.” Now they have taken their support one step further by sharing their expertise with the Occupy Seattle community.

Formed on October 1, 2011 in support of and inspired by movements on Wall Street and around the world, Occupy Seattle is dedicated to addressing and dismantling the economic injustices so deeply entrenched in a system that has failed so many. We are a leaderless movement comprised of people of many colors, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%.

This is a clear start to the co-opting of OWS by the AFT. Clearly, the co-opting started before this between the organizers and the AFT. But this is the first time that partnership is seen to be solidifying by the rest of us.

To all determined protestors of OWS, please be extremely vigilant in voicing your opinions in this atmosphere. It will not be a politically nurturing atmosphere, but a venue of back stabbers and opportunists of the most odious nature.

I will post once more the article by David Walsh on the parent body AFL-CIO which has a perfidious history of crushing the labor movement of this country. Be extremely careful, these may be friends of the organizers who want to join some low level post in the Democractic Party apparatus, but they are not friends of the 99%.

Dear msmikestew35, and friends of occupyseattle:
Mike, I want to meet you and discuss your obviously strong knowledge of the AFL-CIO with you. My gut tells me that you are sincere in your desire to not affiliate with the AFL-CIO through the AFT, and that you have good reasons for your feelings along those lines.
On the other hand, Mike, my gut also tells me that it would be better if you pretty much spoke for yourself about these issues. I hope I am not way off base here, Mike, but to state that “they are not friends of the 99%” is pretty odd, it seems to me. Please consider speaking and writing more clearly about what you mean. Mike, 99% is a pretty big number, and the “99%” occupy movement may not be as homogeneous as you seem to imply. As a matter of fact, msmikestew35, you sound a little paranoid about this issue, but that is just my impression from reading a couple of your comments. I would like to meet you, if I haven’t already, and discuss it with you. If the AFL-CIO is really such a negative organization as you believe, I would like very much to have a chance to become convinced of that, so I can “get my mind right”…(Cool Hand Luke movie).
Anyway, I am headed down to SCCC right now. By the way, I have been with occupyseattle every day starting Oct.1, our “day 1″, for an average of 9-11 hours per day, mostly on the night shift at Westlake Park.

      Thanks for Listening

If you want to know more about the AFL-CIO, the betrayals they have handed down to workers are documented at WSWS.org. Please read.

If you have specific questions, I can try to answer them. But perhaps the most important lessons will come from your own interaction with them and how they will attempt to channel the movement behind the Democratic Party.

A big part of the reason OS got to move to SCCC without police harassment is the work of the students and teachers at SCCC, especially the AFT. We should be grateful to them for this!! The history of the AFL-CIO and the U.S. labor movement in general is long and contradictory. There has been a debate within it over strategy and tactics, allegiance to the Democrats etc. Discussing this would be very useful for the movement. However, the labor movement has lots of resources that it has given to the Occupy Together movement and will give in the future. Its many million members constitute the largest single organized movement for more economic equality in the U.S. It’s general thrust is FOR the goals of OS! It’s participation should be welcomed! We should encourage as many union members as possible to be involved with OS. The Labor Caucus which will meet at the Labor Temple at 6 on Wed. is a good place to help that process along. Does this mean that OS or OT generally has to accept the opinions of labor leaders on supporting candidates? Of course not! OS should remain independent of both parties, both of whom represent the 1%. The Occupy movement will be much stronger , the more rank and file workers are involved. Workers have the potential to take action at work, including strike to win the goals of the Occupy movement.

Here is a secret that I will divulge to you about me:

    1. I am a Christian
    2. I voted for Obama in 2008 and I believed what you believed I was left wing liberal, and when I noticed our freedom was being plucked away and water down by adding more meaning since the 9/11 attacks I started to move my ideologies towards the center
    3. I started to see the reality of change of where is the US Constitution is going with left wing liberals. The removal of Jesus, God, Christianity, the Pledge of Allegiance removal of “under God” and make it unconstitutional to recite in school. Systematically removal of the national anthem, and rewriting history
    4. Mass Amnesty to illegal aliens that is watering down our traditions and values to a foreign traditions and values. Here is proof go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC3xejOJyrI&feature=player_embedded
Believe it or not, but this the beginning of the USA that will be unrecognizable by the time our grandchildren are our age.

Last, this group the Occupy Movement is the start of the tipping point where United States will fall and become another Europe and worst of all with foreign influences, tradition and values by the mass entry of population uncontrollable borders and the failed immigration laws thanks to the Dept. of Justice.

If you remove my profile and posts again then all that I have to say is that this movement is biased and you are you own law, judge and jury, therefore I will be silenced and persecuted by people like you that have blinders and don’t see anything that is going on the left and right. You are just going straight to the end of the road and make the whole nation fall in the cliff with no point of return.
